Background to song lyrics: The California almond bloom is the world’s biggest commercial pollination event, and a multi-billion Dollar business. About half of all North American 2.5 million honeybee hives are driven to the 250,000 hectares of almond plantations in the Central Valley for this three-week event. Diseases are easily transmitted when large numbers of animals or packed together in limited space, and this contributes significantly to the poor state of health of honeybees across the US.
