NASA sent honeybees into space on two occasions, first in 1982 where 14 individual honeybees spent eight days on the Columbia space shuttle, and again in 1984, when a whole hive travelled aboard Challenger for a week. The list of animals catapulted into space began with Russian dog Laika, aboard Sputnik 2 in 1957. This was conceived as a one-way mission and the dog died within hours. This song lyric toys with the idea of the revenge of the test animal, the target being a well-known fictional character from space-themed song lyrics.
lyrics
In my former life
A Muscovite stray dog
Embarked on Noah’s arc
A single animal
A one-way ticket then
I have returned with friends
A star without a name
I’ve come to recompense
You say they call you Major Tom
And that you are a junkie like me
Take off your helmet,
To hear my siren song
Love me in zero gravity
Love me in zero gravity
To hell with ground control,
Your circuits and your wife
I’m going to make you whole
For the first time in your life
Feel my gentle sting
And taste my honeyed kiss
Now let go of my hands
And sink into the abyss
You say they call you Major Tom
And that you are a junkie like me
Take off your helmet
To hear my siren song
Love me in zero gravity
Love me in zero gravity
Bye bye, my love
Deep space, sleep deep
My face, your final dream
Let go, be free
Bye bye, my love
Deep space, sleep deep
My face, your final dream
Let go, be free
Love me in zero gravity
Love me in zero gravity
